Campus Fleet and Commuting

How Green is the Fleet?

UC Davis and UC Davis Health own and maintain a fleet of cars and vans that staff and faculty use for work purposes. The campuses also has trucks, construction vehicles, golf carts and neighborhood utility vehicles for use in campus operations.

Clean air and alternatively fueled vehicles include:

  • electric and neighborhood electric vehicles
  • hybrid sedans
  • plug-in hybrid electric sedans
  • those fueled by compressed natural gas
  • those running on renewable diesel

UC Davis Fleet Services was certified by NAFA in 2015 as a Tier 3 Sustainable Fleet. The Shop Manager and Assistant Director were certified in 2019 as Sustainable Fleet. NAFA Fleet Accreditation remains in effect if the Licensee continues to be enrolled in the Program in accordance with its terms and conditions, and if Licensee continues to meet the Program Requirements. UC Davis Fleet Services are members in good standing and will continue to be.

How We Get to Campus

Each year, the Davis campus measures our commuting mode share with an annual Campus Travel Survey. Mode share is the percentage breakdown of the various ways our students, staff, and faculty travel to campus for classes and work. The Campus Travel Survey is a partnership between the Institute of Transportation Studies, and the Transportation Services unit, and each year a Master’s student is in charge of carrying out the survey. The Sacramento campus has also started measuring commuting through a survey. The survey measures student, staff and faculty commuting, but does not measure patient visits.

Our Bicycle Culture

UC Davis is a certified League of American Bicyclists Platinum level "Bicycle Friendly University" and “Bicycle Friendly Business” located in the Platinum level "Bicycle Friendly Community" of Davis. Bike repair stations and services can be found on the campus sustainability map.

UC Davis bicycling resources include:

The Sacramento campus has also been partnering with the City of Sacramento to increase the number of bike lanes available for bicycle commuters.

UC Davis Health bicycling resources include:

  • A map listing bicycle cage locations and bicycle repair stands and air pumps. The map can be viewed here.

Unitrans: A Unique Aggie Tradition

The student-run Davis-wide bus system, Unitrans, is a unique Aggie tradition, with student drivers, mechanics, and dispatchers! A few facts about Unitrans:

  • Nearly all buses are powered by clean-burning compressed natural gas (CNG), including one of the historic London double-decker buses. And Unitrans has a plan to electrify the bus fleet.
  • Founded in 1968 by UC Davis students
  • Operates in partnership with the City of Davis.

Causeway Connection

In partnership with the City of Sacramento, Sacramento Regional Transit, and Yolobus, UC Davis is expanding cross-causeway connections with an eye on sustainability. The Causeway Connection offers hourly service between the Davis Campus, downtown Sacramento, and UC Davis Health on all-electric zero-emission buses.
